Nordkette Innsbruck

Hiking, biking, climbing, feeling like an eagle or simply enjoying yourself - there's plenty for everyone here. It's a unique feeling to be transferred in a moment from Innsbruck city center into the wild nature of the high mountains.

The Karwendel mountain range overlooks Innsbruck in the north and is the closest ski area to the city. An attraction for sports enthusiasts, nature lovers and connoisseurs. With the Seegrube and the Hafelekar, Innsbruck offers a unique combination of alpine nature experience and urban life.

It takes just 30 minutes to get from the city center to the southern edge of the Karwendel mountain range, which borders directly on the Tyrolean capital. The journey itself is an experience: first you take the funicular, whose futuristic stations were designed by star architect Zaha Hadid, up to the Hungerburg. There you change to the first cable car, which takes you up to the Seegrube at 1,905 meters above sea level, leaving the city further and further behind. To reach the Top of Innsbruck, take the Hafelekarbahn, which continues up to 2,256 meters above sea level. From the station, we walk the last few meters to the Gipefle cross on the Hafelekarspitz to get an even better view of the entire central Inntal valley, the Stubai and Zillertal Alps, the Wipptal valley and - on the north side - the Karwendel mountains.

My tip: a stopover at the Alpine Zoo. You can buy a combined ticket for the train and the zoo at the Nordkettenbahn ticket office. Simply get off at the “Alpenzoo” stop and admire the animals of the Alps - a must-see!

If you really want to get stuck into sightseeing, you should buy the Innsbruck Card. It includes all the important spots.
These include the Nordkettenbahn cable car, the Alpine Zoo, museums and the Swarovski Crystal Worlds.
